It was originally created by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rasmus_Lerdorf\">Rasmus Lerdorf<\/a>&nbsp;in 1994;&nbsp;the PHP&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reference_implementation\">reference implementation<\/a>&nbsp;is now produced by The PHP Group. PHP originally stood for&nbsp;<em>Personal Home Page<\/em>,but it now stands for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recursive_initialism\">recursive initialism<\/a>&nbsp;<em>PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHP code may be executed with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Command-line_interface\">command line interface<\/a>&nbsp;(CLI), embedded into&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HTML\">HTML<\/a>&nbsp;code, or used in combination with various&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Web_template_system\">web template systems<\/a>, web&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Content_management_system\">content management systems<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Web_framework\">web frameworks<\/a>. PHP code is usually processed by a PHP&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interpreter_(computing)\">interpreter<\/a>&nbsp;implemented as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plugin_(computing)\">module<\/a>&nbsp;in a web server or as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Common_Gateway_Interface\">Common Gateway Interface<\/a>&nbsp;(CGI) executable. The web server outputs the results of the interpreted and executed PHP code, which may be any type of data, such as generated HTML code or binary image data. PHP can be used for many programming tasks outside of the web context, such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Computer_software\">standalone<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graphical_user_interface\">graphical applications<\/a>&nbsp;and robotic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unmanned_aerial_vehicle\">drone<\/a>&nbsp;control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standard PHP interpreter, powered by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zend_Engine\">Zend Engine<\/a>, is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_software\">free software<\/a>&nbsp;released under the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PHP_License\">PHP License<\/a>. PHP has been widely ported and can be deployed on most web servers on almost every&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operating_system\">operating system<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Computing_platform\">platform<\/a>, free of charge.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PHP#cite_note-foundations-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PHP language evolved without a written&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Formal_specification\">formal specification<\/a>&nbsp;or standard until 2014, with the original implementation acting as the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_facto\">de facto<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;standard which other implementations aimed to follow.
